The Amidst Showcase Model was born after Lilian’s first few years as an independent dance maker and performer. She realised that many of the performance ‘opportunities’ dancers are expected to have taken up as emerging or established members of the sector involve the artist or organisation themselves paying large fees to be involved or even considered for auditions or application processes.
When applying for her first Arts Council bursary it became incredibly important that any funding would help not only her company, but would encourage the dance sector within the South East, to continue benefiting its performers and artists. Rather than simply using them, she would provide genuine opportunities for them to be recognised for their incredible hard work and dedication to their trade. Not only this, the events she would create would encourage productive and supportive networks within the community through the arts, encouraging authentic connection between all and anybody.
2019 was an incredibly successful year in which Callous Affection hosted two Amidst events in Brighton in collaboration with Brighton Open Air Theatre and Copperdollar Studios, with support from Arts Council England, South East Dance, and ONCA Arts. And now in 2021 you can expect the stakes to be raised – with another aspect being added to the project to form a trio of events: Amidst – Performance Artists’ Showcase (for intergenerational arts and performers of any age), Amidst – Emerging Artists’ Scratch Night, and Amidst – Young Persons’ Big Shout (youth project targeting young people between 12 and 18 years).
